BIO
The Artist.

Gianluca Occhipinti is a Toronto-based pianist and composer whose work reflects a foundation in both classical and jazz traditions. Immersed in music from an early age, he has developed a distinctive voice shaped by a wide range of influences, mentors, and performance experiences. Gianluca's music education has been a lifelong journey that includes an Outstanding Commitment Award for Music at Etobicoke School of the Arts, completion of the Royal Conservatory of Music Level Eight, a year at Humber Polytechnic studying under the legendary Hilario Duran, and for the past seven years, weekly lessons with JUNO Award-winning pianist Jeremy Ledbetter. Jeremy has served as the central mentor and inspiration to Gianluca's development as a jazz musician. Although improvisational performance has been a more recent development for Gianluca, he has quickly gathered an impressive list of experiences. Gianluca has received the opportunity to play alongside Felix Pastorius, Don Byron, Alex Dean, Lorne Lofsky, and more. Gianluca is no stranger to large audiences either, performing as both principal bassist and featured pianist with the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra. Gianluca has established himself as a rising presence on the Toronto music scene, and can be found playing with local heavy weights such as Mark Kelso, Luis Deniz, the fellow Occhipinti, and Breakthrough Jazz Artist of the Year Agneya Chikte. Gianluca has also grown as a part of the Davie Studios community as a special guest for their highly praised Listening Room, alongside artists such as Joanna Majoko and Larnell Lewis, touching on the RnB/hiphop side of Gianluca's interests.

For the past year, Gianluca's focus has been on presenting his original compositions to the world. This has taken shape in his debut album "Dissolution"; a genre-breaking exploration of improvised music across beautiful melodies and powerful grooves. The record features Grammy Award-winning drummer Larnell Lewis, as well as the highly sought after Jinu Isac and young virtuoso Jordan Pelunsky. Dissolution has received high attention both locally and online, and Gianluca continues to perform it as it is best presented; in a live setting.

EMERGENCE
ON THE SCENE

Son to Michael Occhipinti and nephew to Roberto Occhipinti, both Canadian jazz royalty, improvised music always found its way in the household. Without even knowing it, Gianluca was surrounded by musical legends, such as Don Byron, Jeff Coffin, Felix Pastorius; all who he could call his friends. Jazz was not, however, the starting point for Gianluca. It was instead, the James Brown, Commodores, and Jackson 5 that would ring through his ears. Both his parent's musical interests and encouragement are to thank for his recent developments. By the age of three, young Gianluca could be found playing along to Led Zeppelin on the drums. Piano lessons did not come easy to Gianluca, who would rather spend his time learning Beatles tunes or plunking away at the keys. Gianluca always had a knack for writing compositions, whether by hand, with Sibelius, or on Garageband. But eventually, Gianluca settled in with Madoka Murata as his teacher, who provided the foundational skills so essential to today. Gianluca also found himself in a strong public school music system, led by Ian Medley and John Kim, where he would pick up the cello and join his first jazz band on electric bass. It was on bass that Gianluca would attend Etobicoke School of the Arts for, where Pamela Bettger's advanced string ensembles would lend him the attention to detail and phrasing that remains deep in his ear. It was also at ESA that Gianluca made friends with Jamie Wells, a bright young composer who influenced the hip hop and production side of Gianluca's interests. Jamie would be the peer to push Gianluca's piano side, as a drummer with an equal desire to develop as an improviser. The two were inspired by mutual influences, such as James Francies, who would end up giving a firsthand approval. Even as the focus shifted towards piano, however, Gianluca retained his interest for classical bass, joining Jamie as a member of Colin Clarke's Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra. Colin's musical perspective, a contemporary classical medium with Caribbean, gospel, and jazz background, has been nothing short of pivotal to Gianluca's musicality.

Over the past seven years, Gianluca has studied with JUNO Award-winning pianist Jeremy Ledbetter, whose mentorship has been the most central to his development as a composer and improviser. Lessons began with Stevie Wonder, easing into jazz adjacent harmony with an emphasis on groove and rhythm. Gianluca's first real introduction to jazz piano was with Jeremy's Oscar Peterson transcriptions, where Gianluca's goal became to learn the entire Night Train album note for note. Jeremy would push Gianluca with increasingly more advanced theory and exercises, while also teaching Chopin, Debussy, and most importantly the firsthand musical experiences that Jeremy had picked up in Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, and Venezuela. Gianluca continues to confide in Jeremy with compositions, improvisations, and the next steps in progression.

Gianluca's professional music career began in 2024, with an opportunity to play alongside his father and the incredible Felix Pastorius on a four-night stint. Gianluca, who had been previously reluctant to improvise publicly, or even with Jeremy for that matter, was finally pushed beyond his barrier and taking off at an exponential rate. Soon enough, Gianluca was presenting shows alongside Jamie, and by the fall he found himself studying piano at Humber Polytechnic. At Humber, Gianluca met keen musicians of his own age group, at a higher level than he had ever played with before. In particular, drummer Jacob Lee and bassist Jordan Pelunsky showed an immediate willingness to workshop Gianluca's original music, and the trio would go on to gig this music across the city for the entire year. Jacob took Gianluca's jam-based improvisation to the next level, giving the fuel for so many of the compositions that remain in his arsenal. It was at Humber that Gianluca also studied under Amanda Tosoff, Kim Ratcliffe, and the living legend Hilario Duran. The year was filled with living legends, in fact, and Gianluca would get the opportunity to perform alongside Alex Dean, Don Byron, Luis Deniz, and more. All while Gianluca honed his skills as a bandleader, and polished the pieces that would later appear on his debut record.

In 2025, Gianluca received surprising traction on social media, while posting a composition challenge of his own. What began as a personal project reached millions across the globe, many of whom would stick around as buyers and promoters of the music. Attention aside, Gianluca found passion in presenting his original music to an audience. Both the process and the encouragement would lead Gianluca to focus on making his own album, and seek guidance and education from private teachers rather than at an institution. Gianluca continued to build connections throughout the Toronto music scene, such as with Davie Studios, who would later feature him as a special guest alongside Larnell Lewis. It was Larnell who had accepted the invitation to record with Gianluca, providing an unfathomable step forward.

2026 would be the year for Gianluca's debut album. An amalgamation of everything he had worked towards up to this point, and a learning experience that has taken Gianluca's musicianship to a professional level. Being in the studio alongside the world's greatest drummer, Larnell Lewis, and an up and coming greatest drummer in Jinu Isac, Gianluca got to witness his original compositions evolve beyond what he thought possible. The communication and interaction between Gianluca, Jordan, and Larnell/Jinu, spawned contagious and timeless musical moments. While working on "Dissolution", in a high pressure and tight timeline situation, Gianluca improved not just in his playing, but in mixing, bandleading, managing, editing, and more. The debut album has reached thousands, with clips reaching millions, but most importantly, Gianluca's original compositions have reached real human emotions and grown personal connections. Gianluca has been showcasing "Dissolution" live alongside Jordan Pelunsky and Marito Marques, while at the same time working on many more projects to come. Gianluca also continues to work as a sideman, performing with groups such as Mark Kelso's Jazz Exiles, and Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award-winner Agneya Chikte, as well as fellow emerging artists such as Jonathan Scott and Finn Chercover. Gianluca aims to find new inspiration and new challenges in every corner he can, while showcasing his findings as a teacher, composer, performer, and forever; as a student.
